Workshop 1 Recap

2–3 minutes

On Wednesday, May 27th, community members gathered at the scenic Ellis House & Equestrian Center to kick off the first of four public workshops for the Kendall County Comprehensive Plan. The informal workshop was focused on learning thoughts and comments about the County’s existing conditions and vision for the future.

The project team opened the evening with a presentation outlining the purpose and scope of the Comprehensive Plan, introducing the project team, and showcasing the website and on-line engagement tools available for public input. They also shared an overview of Kendall County’s current conditions, including population trends, the job market, housing, and natural resources.

A key part of the workshop focused on community dialogue. Residents participated in a lively discussion, sharing their visions, concerns, and aspirations for Kendall County. Some highlights from the conversation included:

  • Pride in agriculture: Residents expressed pride in the county’s agricultural heritage, especially in crops like corn, soybeans, and pumpkins.
  • Favorite local destinations: Forest preserves, the Fox River, Downtown Oswego and Yorkville, bike trails, farmsteads, and the County Historic Museum were cited as popular places for recreation and relaxation.
  • Tourism recommendations: Attendees recommended the Farnsworth House, Silver Springs and Hoover Forest Preserves, and scenic country roads as must-see attractions for visitors.
  • Looking ahead: In 10–15 years, participants envision Kendall County with a connected trail system, well-planned roads, preserved open spaces, and a stronger tax base.
  • Future concerns: Residents identified key challenges such as development pressures on natural areas, spot zoning issues, concerns about water supply, and high property taxes.
  • Ideas for action: Suggestions included reviving the Wikaduke Trail Committee to proactively plan for future development and learning from Will County’s approach to transportation infrastructure.

The project team will host three more public workshops at different locations. Please attend one that is most convenient for you!
